about

This CD was inspired by a 2,100-year-old analog computer! Built 2,100 years ago, most likely by Archimedes, the Antikythera Mechanism consists of at least 30 bronze gears built into a box operated with a small wooden crank in order to predict the position of the Sun (gold), the Moon (silver), Mercury (turquoise), Venus (lapis lazuli), Mars (red onyx), Jupiter (white crystal), and Saturn (obsidian), especially eclipses, which were very important events for our ancestors—for practical as well as ceremonial reasons. The Antikythera Mechanism was found in 1900 in a sunken ship off the coast of the island of Antikythera located between Crete and the Peloponnese, but the mechanism’s technological sophistication was so advanced that for about 70 years researchers thought that the mechanism was a modern device of some sort that had somehow sunk near an ancient ship. The Antikythera Mechanism is exhibited in the National Archeological Museum of Athens, Greece.
